Hacks to Avoid or Fix a Leaky Vape

There’s nothing guaranteed to make vaping unpleasant more quickly than a leaky vape. While e-juice flavors may taste and smell terrific when actually being vaped, they can prove a little less pleasing, for both you and those around you, when soaking through your pocket. Also, it’s never fun to reach for your favorite vape juice and discover it’s all been wasted! Thankfully, leaky vape hardware is a problem that can usually be avoided and fixed fairly simply.

Avoiding Leaks

Keep It Tight and Screwed Down

An issue with a vape device’s tightness is one of the most common culprits when a device is leaking. It’s also one of the most commonly overlooked. Under-tightening can cause a screw-seal to fail, which is one of the most common causes of leaks. If a seal isn’t tight, leaking is pretty much inevitable. On the other hand, over-tightening can also cause a leak. Tightening too much can damage a device’s seal, causing leaks, as can bad threading or “cross-threading.” So double-check your vape device to ensure everything is properly screwed down.

Tank Protocol

Another common cause of vape device leaks is bad tank protocol. Bad tank protocol covers a number of issues. Overfilling the tank is a biggie. When too much vape juice is added to the tank, the excess has to go somewhere, and all too often that’s the cloth around your pocket. When filling your tank, think of it like you’re filling a glass with beer—pour it in a careful, slow, measured way. The other chief violation of tank protocol is tipping it the wrong direction. If you tip your vape upside down gravity and fluid mechanics will not be friendly to you.

Fixing Leaks

Additions to Your Vape

Sometimes the best way to guarantee that your precious vape flavors aren’t both wasted and responsible for an unsightly mess is to simply add to your vape. Depending on the brand of vape device (one that accommodates additional seals), adding those additional seals can solve the problem. The same applies to additional wicking. Sometimes, however, the only response to a leaky vape is replacing the coil.

Switching Juices and Drawing Slowly

One way in which leaks can be prevented is the selection of a vape juice that’s less prone to leak. Propylene glycol (PG) vape juices are thinner than vegetable glycerin juices (VG). Switching over to a thicker VG-based juice can simply and effectively reduce the risk of leaking. If you’re getting more leaks from the drip tip and or drawing vape juice into your mouth when taking hits, consider drawing on your device more slowly. Drawing too quickly or sharply can pull more liquid into the coil than the coil is capable of vaporizing.
